They disappear through a dozen small things the walkthrough catches: grease film on the range hood, soap scale on the shower glass, dust on the baseboards behind where the couch used to be. Start high and work down. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vent covers shed dust onto everything below them, so they go first. Then walls and switch plates: look for hand marks around door frames and light switches, which are the single most-noticed detail in a walkthrough. Magic erasers handle most of it; note anything that's actual paint damage rather than dirt.
The kitchen is where deposits are won and lost. Empty every cabinet and wipe it inside; pull the oven racks and clean the oven properly; defrost and wipe the fridge if it stays; degrease the range hood and backsplash. Landlords open appliances — a clean kitchen with a dirty oven reads as an unfinished job.
Bathrooms come second on the inspection list. Descale the shower head and glass, scrub grout lines, disinfect the toilet including the base and behind it, and polish mirrors and chrome. If the caulk is mildewed beyond cleaning, say so in your handover notes rather than hoping nobody looks.
Floors go last, always: vacuum every room including closets, then mop hard floors, working toward the exit. Do a final pass for nail holes, burnt-out bulbs, and forgotten items in high cabinets — small fixes that read as care.
